Pinewood Estate

Pinewood Estate is a 20-room, Mediterranean-style mansion built on 7 acres in Lake Wales, Florida. The estate was built from 1930-1932 for C. Austin Buck, a Philadelphia steel tycoon. Originally called “El Retiro” (Spanish for ‘retreat’) it was designed as a second home and has been restored to keep its original 1930s style. It is located on the grounds of the massive Bok Tower and Gardens, a National Historic Landmark. The mansion is available to tour for guests of the Bok Tower Gardens.

The owner was a horticulturist who insisted the house be designed around the gardens — not the other way around. The home was built to develop a natural flow from the house to the gardens, which include multiple large fountains, a pond, and an English style country garden. With its wood, iron, and tile work, the estate retains its distinctly Spanish-influenced architectural design.
