Rio Sucuri

Located some 12 miles (20 km) southwest of Bonito, Rio Sucuri is a particularly crystalline river, mainly thanks to high levels of calcium carbonate. Its transparency is enhanced by a riverbed whose bleached hue is composed of calcified snail shells, and when lit by the sun’s rays, the river’s surface takes on an otherworldly blue hue that contrasts vividly with the surrounding emerald forest inhabited by monkeys, sloths, and brilliantly-feathered macaws.

Floating down the river with snorkel gear and communing with the multitude of fish is the main draw. Although the expedition lasts no more than an hour, there are plenty of other activities available on the 19,800-acre (8,000-hectare) site belonging to the Fazenda São Geraldo ranch property. Among the most popular are hiking, biking, quadricycle, and horseback riding outings, with strategic stops for bathing and a typical regional lunch.

Practical Info

Access to Rio Sucuri is via the Fazenda São Geraldo, which can be reached by following the Estrada para São Geraldo along a 10.5-mile (17-km) unpaved road. The fazenda is open daily from 8am to 3pm, but tours must be booked in advance.
