This small-group tour to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and the Puna District starts in Kona and stops in Hilo to pick up additional passengers. From Kona, begin your day with a scenic drive between the two spectacular volcanoes on the Big Island, Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea. Make a brief stop in Hilo to pick up additional passengers before heading to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Hawaii’s only UNESCO World Heritage Site. Your expert guide will lead you on several narrated hikes in the park, including visits to active volcanic craters and steam vents, a stroll through the 500-year-old Thurston Lava Tube and a visit to the Jaggar Museum. Your guide will also provide comprehensive and fascinating commentary on the history of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Afterward, enjoy a delicious picnic lunch.
Continue your volcano adventure with a drive to the Puna District, located on the east side of the Big Island. Puna is home to the best lava-viewing locations on the island and is famous for its black-sand beaches, lava-rock tide pools and ancient forests of lava-tree molds. When you arrive in Puna, your guide will prepare a Hawaiian-style barbecue dinner at a private macadamia nut and honey farm. Sit back, relax and enjoy a savory meal after a day of hiking .
After dinner, take a scenic drive to Kaimu, the former site of Hawaii’s most famous black-sand beach that now has been covered in hardened lava. Walk to the Kalapana Lava Viewing Area for a view of the black smoke rising from the active volcano. Watch the skylights in the lava tubes glow bright red as the escaping gases and liquid rock turn solid when the lava flows into the ocean. See new land being created right before your eyes!
On the drive back to Hilo and Kona, you get great views of the Hamakua Coast at night.
Special note: As volcanic activity changes constantly, molten lava cannot be guaranteed and may not be seen. Tour runs rain or shine.
